Welcome to Flash Fiction Month, dayVID BOWIE DAY.

Greetings earthlings, and welcome to day 29, aka David Bowie Day. A year and a half on, the world is still spinning and yet, not all inhabitants have moved on from the loss of David Bowie. Hydra is one of those beings, paying a homage by keeping David Bowie Day very much alive and kicking.

Bowie was known for his versatility and constant reinvention across his 5-decade music career, but is also remembered for his performances in films and musicals, too. Today revolves around remembering as many aspects of the man and his work as we can squeeze in.

Did we mention that today is also NASTY ASS CHALLENGE DAY, too?

Instructions

Flash Fiction Month is about writing – and posting – a story between 55-1000 words in length every day during July. Each day we'll upload a deviation with optional prompts, themes, and the occasional challenge, where you can post a link to your story for the day.

Paste a link to your flash fiction piece for July 29 in the comments below.

If you write a story every day and complete every challenge, you might be eligible to win something, and you'll certainly get a whiter smile, be invited to more parties and improve your manly/womanly vigour.

Everyone loves comments, so make an effort to encourage your fellow Flash Fiction Month participants. A quick comment lets a writer know somebody's reading, and we all love that.

Once a week or thereabouts, we’ll be giving you a fiendishly difficult and unpleasant challenge; a task so evil, so heart-stoppingly awful that you’ll wonder how we can sleep at night. Today is one such day.

NASTY ASS CHALLENGE: DAVID BOWIE DAY

 Bullet; Black ELEMENT 1: Lazarus

Your story must include a character in mourning. Over the loss of what or who is up to you.

Bullet; Black ELEMENT 2: The Buddha of Suburbia

Throughout his life David Bowie changed his religion several times. Explore the theme of religion in your piece, either through a character, inanimate objects or the gods themselves

Bullet; Black ELEMENT 3: Moonlight Daydream

Include a minimum of 3 titles of films and/or musicals David Bowie was part of, whether that be as lead, cameo or writer.

:bulletblack: ELEMENT 4: The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell
Use elements #1, #2 and #3, AND the 2 optional elements to give yourself a total of 5 challenge elements, one for each decade of Bowie’s career.

Bullet; Black OPTIONAL ELEMENT: Changes
Not a fan of all of the challenge elements? No problem, Hydra presents you with 2 more options to make your DBD story fractionally easier. Should you so choose, you may optionally change element #4, substituting it for one of these instead:
  1. BlackstarInclude some form of swan song  in your flash fiction.
  2. Breaking GlassHave a character break the 4th wall, communicating to the audience only in David Bowie song titles

And remember, if you've done the challenge let us know by writing "Challenge" next to the link for your submission.

Every year someone feels the need to complain about not liking/being familiar with David Bowie or his music. For these people, we would point out that none of the challenge elements actually require that you listen to his songs (though we still heartily encourage it), so don't whinge about it or you will be placed into the Special FFM Corner of ShameNana, look what I have and you dont!

So I ended up doing this one, nearly a year later, but I can't upload it here because it's part of a fanfic I'm writing and I haven't published up to that point.
BUT I DID IT.
HOW'S THAT FOR A NASTY ASS CHALLENGE.
